Return Fr Europe Backpack-2

Shah...FYI sepanjang perjalanan kami ..kami sll bincang ttg apa yg telah kami baca dlm forum ni esp yours
and Aweganu nye posting..banyak membantu.

Yup…that’s the amount spend. You can say it is cheap cos persiapan and bekalan awal agak banyak. Our
luggage weigh 13kg masa pergi and balik 14kg..tu pun selepas byk barang makanan habis but diganti dgn
souveniers lak  . Masa kami travel, sepatutnya spring time but looks like suhu masih sejuk. On the average about 10 degrees
celcius. Masa kami melawat Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) suhu was –ve 9 degrees!, Jadi tak perlu bawa banyak pakaian untuk
bersalin. I think I cuma salin shirt and jeans 3 kali saja throughout my traveling. Bawa balik baju bersih yg tak bersalin.

Some of the tips and bekalan yang perlu kita beri perhatian..

1)our backpack beg..make sure yang tahan lasak. Kalau boleh jgn beli knack beg yg top load..beli yg berzip yg boleh buka
keliling sebab kalau topload setiap kali nak ambil barang dari beg kita kena punggah. Kalau yg berzip senang simpan/ambil...
pakaian kita boleh digulung2 untuk mengmaximisekan space. A few brand yg tahan lasak adalah Deuter, High Sierra or Vertical.
I stayed with a Thai couple kat Munich and they are having tough time to load and unload pakaian due to topload beg.
They admire our beg yg berzip kat keliling. To yang I teringat nak share this tip kat sini.

2) Jgn lupa beli beg yg bergantung kat tengkok untuk simpan passport, ticket, cards n cash. Beli yg material nipis but
tahan lasak. Nipis spy tak berat ditengkok. Recommended brand, EC Go. Some suka beli pouch kat
pinggang .. but for me its more convenient yang bergantung sebab better protection and senang to
retrieve tickets/passport. I beli beg ni for RM16.00

3) Oh ya..make sure ada credit card. Masa I nak buat hotel booking via Tourist Information counter kat
Paris, they do not accept cash.

4) Kasut lak..make sure bawa sandle bertali made from 100% rubber..leh bawa berjalan and to toilet. Klau
kain tu..bawa gi toilet & klau basah lambat kering pulak.  I beli kat Royal Sport shop..jenis “after sport
wear”  brand Rider. Jgn lupa sneaker sbb nak backpack ni byk jln so kasut sneaker kena yg comfortable
dan durable gak. Kalau wear kasut yang tak selesa.. wow bayangkan la dengan 13kg load and the amount
of milage nak berjalan…jaga kaki sentiasa sihat babe.

5)Telekong..klau boleh hand carry. My flight transit kat Dubai..masuk bilik sembahyang taada disediakan
telekung.

6) Beli roti jenis loaf sebab murah. Boleh makan masa breakfast and lunch cicah ngan sambal or curry yang
kita bawa. Jangan lupa bawa sambal sebab youll miss it especially bila terbau kebab fr the roadside.

7) EuRail Pass kena beli outside Europe country. Eurail pass entitle for free ride at some local  transport and discounts bila travel Eurostar and Ferry Dover-Calais-Dover as well as discounted ticket to some local transportation. Sebelum bertolak make
sure dah beli EuRail Pass. EuRail pass ni membolehkan kita travel to 18 europe countries within 15days in the 1st class couches.
Eurail Pass E$820 untuk 2 org (RM3,772 or RM1,886 seorg)

8) Kita boleh masuk at any B&B hotel or hostel and ask them for any cheap lodging around. Dalam byk
situasi, the counter people are very helpful to tell us which place offer cheaper rate.

9) Some Eurail train need reservation. When making reservation and was told the seat are fully taken,
don’t just stop there. W e can try and ask from the next counter. Ive experienced in Amsterdam was told there was
no more seat but we kept asking from one counter to another and we got what we wanted at the3rd counter. Kena persistent!

10) Camtu gak masa nak buat reservation excursion to visit Keukonhof (ladang bunga Tulips). Kat Tourist
Information counter said the morning group dah penuh and has to join the afternoon group. Since we are
to travel to Munich that evening, we have to get the morning session. We decided to make inquiry from the agent
just outside the Customer Information and managed to join the morning group.

11) When we were in Munich, asrama yg kami tinggal,EuroYouth Hostel ada sediakan free telephone call to some hotels outside Munich. We made a call (free) to Switzerland to make reservation for Balmers Herberge (BH)-Hostel but was told fully booked.
Then we logged to internet for BH reservation and got it..at even cheaper rate!.Internet rate – 1 hour for E$ 1.50
(abt RM6.75). This is recommended hostel..service bagus, bersih and friendly people especially cleaner dia
nama Jamal (muslim).

12) Being lady’s travelers, security is very paramount to us. Setiap kali kami singgah kat hostels atau hotel
kami takkan lupa bertanyakan arah kiblat and waktu2 bersolat. In a way the tuan hotel/hostel knows that
kami ni orang2 baik dan they will “protect” us..espacially masa kami tinggal kat Amsterdam di tengah2 area dadah and
prostitues…(will elaborate in our story kat Amsterdam, in our later posting). Masa beli belah and bila tuan kedai knows that
we are Muslims.. (tuan kedai pun Morroccon Muslim) they somehow gave discounts to our purchasers.

beli extra pad lock. Oh ya ..jangan lupa bawa exercise book untuk catitan perjalanan. I terlupa bawa and beli 1
exercise book yg paling murah kat London cost me 1.50 pound..kira la … =RM9.75. klau kat Malaysia RM0.99 kat Popular
Book Store. So….consider of bawa bekalan from home???  

Return Fr Europe Backpack-3

Day1-LONDON

Masa booked ticket tru MATTA fare bulan March 2006 in KL, I choose Emirates Air..tak lah termurah but I was told service dia
bagus..menandingi SIA. At RM1999 +RM715(taxes) it’s a good bargain. Ke LONDON kita boleh landing at 5 international
airports: HEATHROW, GATWICK, STANSTED, LUTON or CITY. Saya pilih tiba LONDON melalui GATWICK dan balik melalui
HEATHROW. Jarak GATWICK to LONDON CENTRAL adalah 30miles south and jarak HEATHROW to LONDON CENTRAL adalah 15miles west.

KL-Dubai-Gatwick, London...we started our journey from KL on 19/4/2006 jam 0055hr dengan Emirates Airways..singgah kat
Dubai on 10/4/2006 for 4 hours then sampai Gatwick Int Airport, London jam 12petang. Masa kat Dubai Airport sempat guna
free internet kiosk and hantar a few emails to friends and office mates. The timing of my flight is just nice..tolak at midnite
from KL and sampai LONDON tengahari. I think bila kita nak beli ticket kapal terbang, kita kena take the arrival time into
consideration gak. As for me, time arrival penting sebab kalau sampai malam, I ada masalah hendak mencari hostel/hotel sebab I tak buat booking reason being I dunno where to stay yet.Masa kastam check..takde masalah langsung..dia tanya soklan
basic aje…like keje apa, pegi mana, duduk mana, brapa hari staying here etc..sekejap aje. Abt my luggage ..with the food
yg I usung..ingat nak kena tarik..but there was no question asked!

The moment sampai GATWICK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, kami rasa lost ..tak tahu where to begin sbb this is our first backpack destination. Berbekalkan buku The Rough Guide To Europe 2006 (beli kat Popular Book Store for RM32.50),  didalam pemilihan
tempat menetap, kami decided to stay at an area near to the Central Station. Our initial plan was to stay somewhere at
COURTS EARL (kerana kawan bagi tau hotel disini murah) but changed to stay somewhere near VICTORIA STATION. We
wanted to take the tube but was advised by the Tourist Information Counter to take the train sebab tak rushing lagi pun klau
ambik tube kami kena tukar station.. and klau naik train I tak perlu tukar2 station. Kami beli tiket keretapi dari vending machine
for {9 ({=pound} to Victoria Station. Take note : there are 2 information counters..1) Tourist Information Counter, untuk
pelancung cam kita. We can asked about transportation, hotels etc. 2} Information Counter-untuk bertanya/beli tiket transports.

Semasa diatas ktapi, kami berbual with one local guy. we learn from this guy  that we should buy a Travelcard @ {4.50 valid to
travel on buses, suburban trains and the tube the whole day..instead of buying the {9 ticket tadi. Apa yang menyentuh hati
kami ialah this guy help us to take us to HUGH STREET, VICTORIA…berderet2 rumah disitu menawarkan B&B lodging. This guy
also help us to knock from one house to another bertanyakan brapa rate untuk tinggal semalam. Kebanyakan mengenakan rate
above {50 untuk 2 orang in the end we ended with IVY HOTEL yang charge us {45 with toilet and breakfast.  This place is only
3 minutes walk to VICTORIA STATION!
We are satisfied with the room with clean bed n toilet  and location near VICTORIA CENTRAL station (cam KL Central la).
In LONDON ni klau nak sewa bilik with toilet, rate dia lebih tinggi dari yg tak de toilet. Since dah dua hari kami belum mandi, we
choose the one with toilet.

Selepas mandi dan berkemas..we started our sight-seeing. Kami Cuma berjalan kaki dari hotel dan sempat melawat at the
NORTH OF RIVER THAMES area WHITEHALL merangkumi TRAFALGAR SQUARE, PARLIAMENT SQ. DAN BUCKINGHAM PALACE.
To reach to these places takes about 10minutes stroll from our hotel. Semasa dekat BUCKINGHAM PALACE  kami sempat
menyaksikan CHANGING OF THE GUARD. Saya difahamkan upacara ni sentiasa diadakan kecuali kalau hari hujan. Kami juga
sempat ke WHITEHALL-banyak government building dan berhenti bergambar depan 10 DOWNING ST.  Ramai orang bergambar
disini. Menuju keselatan WHITEHALL kami ke HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT then Menara jam yang terkenal, BIG BEN..jam yang
membawa 13 ton lonceng.  Saya enjoy walking at THE MALL yang selari dengan TRAFALGAR SQ..dibarisi dengan pokok. Pastu
kami berehat di St JAMES PARK then kami berjalan ke COVENT GARDEN.

It was a long day for us. Malam nya we stay in door ..masak nasi impit dua packet..1 untuk mkn malam satu buat bekal berjalan
esok. Makan malam: Nasi Himpit, rendang daging, Brahim brand plus Nescafe …eehhmmm .. feeling  at home...

aku gi london last year tak terpikir pulak nak cross jln kaki from trafalgar square to buckingham palace through 'The Mall' crossing tu. so this year aku plan nak menapak dari trafalgar, lalu ikut "The Mall", singgah St James Park, singgah St James Palace, lepas tu terus gi buckingham palace.

Thks shah. Nis ingat nak try bawa sikit food masa gi NZ nanti.
Sherrina...I am lucky my partner bkn jenis byk songeh...Pilih partner yg "tough" cam backpack gak .
Teamwork very important. Setiap kali dalam keretapi kami akan bincang ttg our destinasi yg nak dituju.
Kami bg2 tugas..my partner tugas dia focus membaca peta & tentukan pengangkutan apa nak naik. I panggil
dia "logistic officer". Yang I lak plan what to do, where to go, how to go..& what to eat or what to buy etc.
masing2 jaga barang sendiri. Time kena punctual. I rasa klau geng ramai2 susah gak...kami 2 org senang
manage atau jaga each other.
Ttg gambar tu..byk gambar solo..tp ada juga gambar berdua, bertiga, berempat..caranya..
1) Masa kat Neuschwanstein, Germany jumpa pelajar Msia 2 org..masa tu la kami bergaya bergambar
pelbagai posing ..berdua, bertiga..etc.
2) Masa nak tangkap gambar scenery (dr keretapi) kami berdua enterframe depan gambar/scenery..
pusingkan viewer camera mengadap kami & sendiri tangkap..menjadi gak.
Yup..tak brani bg local ppl took our pic..nanti dengan kamera2 dia bawa lari... .

Abt the camera..I use JVC Everio..dia leh movie camera n still picture. Movie guna harddisk memory, yg
still picture I bawa memory 1GB. Battery I bawa 2 .. movie camera helpful bila nak tangkap gambar kat
Keukenhof,Holland-ladang Tulips, bangunan gothic yg tinggi2, Swiss Alps yg terbentang indah etc.

nak tanya skt.. klu jln kat paris tu..places like eiffel tower, or other places of interest ada admission fee tak..n klu ada berapa harganya...
btho... alhamdulillah ..sepanjang perjalanan, kami jumpa ramai helpful people..mereka dan kami
ada communication problem...tp tak menghalang bg mrk memberi bantuan. Umpamanya, kat Belgium
bila kami tny for direction, "pakcik" tu siap tulis dalam buku catitan I nama hostel yg murah, nama metro
n cam mana nak gi ke metro tu dan brapa stesyen kami lalu baru turun fr tube. Siap dia bg tiket tube
yg bernilai E$1.50 to each of us, free.
Kat Paris..kami berhenti kat traffic lite to cross the road utk baca peta, "makcik" ni tny in french..
kami senyum aje..tunjuk sign langguage tak faham..pastu dia tny kami tau bahasa spanyolkami
tunjuk sign langguage tak tahu..dia lak tunjuk expressi muka frust tak dpt menolong kami.
Nisda..pasal bawa mknan..mmg tak de masalah. Klau Shah bawa can food, i lak bawa jenis sachet..
klau kari/rendang dr brand brahim tu kami buang kotak dia bawa sachet aje.
Sachet leh megurangkan berat beg.
mushroom soup best tau..prepare masuk dlm flask anytime leh lepak minum kat tepi sungai cicah ngan roti.

yup. aku pun buat mcm you ari tu. brand brahim tu aku buang semua kotak & bw sachet jer so that tak makan space. brahim kurma daging, sambal ikan bilis, rendang daging, brahim kari ayam semua aku sumbat masuk backpack. paling senang brahim ni, rendam jer packet tu dlm boiled water terus boleh serve. masa nak keluar travel baru aku buat sandwich & put into plastic container, so that masa travel kalau lapar boleh alas perut. travel tempat sejuk ni memang cepat lapar.

okay...nora, continue your story. ramai yg ternanti2 sambungan cerita backpacking you ni..

p/s: brape lama ek kumpul duit nak gi jalan2 mcm ni :bgrin:
Return Fr Europe Backpack-4
Day2-11/4/06 @ LONDON to BRUSSELS

Ivy Hotel, London ada breakfast. The dining room is a small room at the basement. Ada
4 tables ready ngan glases for juice, cawan utk kopi/teh, jem, butter, bowl for cereal
dan toasted bread. The lady yg menghidang tu sibuk keluar masuk kitchen n dining table.
Masa tu ada guess lain dah turun lagi awal dr kami (7am). The only word coming fr the lady
Was “more toast?”…pastu dia buat hal dia.It was a pleasant breakfast.

Hari ni kami plan to go to Brussels. Kami akan ke VICTORIA STATION-WATERLOO EST-EUROSTAR.
Ivy Hotel is 3 minutes walking distance to VICTORIA ST. It was a working day and pagi tu..we witnessed
ramai Wargakerja London bergegas2 kat station..mmg ramai giler manusia. Its like a herd of elephant
rushing fr one end to another. Kami terasa cam rusa masuk kampung lak kat situ. Kami bertanya dengan
1 pakcik dr Filippina yg pernah ambik Eurostar.  Dr dia kami dapat panduan bagaimana to get to WATERLOO EAST (WE).
Kami naik bus ke WE dgn tambang {1.50. Setiba disana kami ke EUROSTAR counter, tunjuk EURAIL PASS
dan beli ticket at {90, each.its a discounted fare sbb kami ada eurailpass. Masuk ke departure hall Eurostar ada pemeriksaan kastam, sama cam kat airport. Disini la passport kami dicop, then EURAIL PASS kami dicop
tarikh perjalanan bermula. Abt Eurail pass..dr tarikh dia mula dicop..pass eurail ni allow us to travel on the
train to any 18 countries on a 1st class coach fr 11/4/04 to 25/04/06, in my case.

Our Eurostar sepatutnya bertolak at 1043 but semasa menunggu kat departure hall ada pengumuman
yg train menghadapi masalah teknikal. Kami diarah supaya menaiki train ke Ashford International. Masa
tu ada dalam 800 passengers..apa lagi chaotic keaadaan. Yg kesian nya old ppl and family with
young children.Setiba di AI..sekali lagi ada kastam check dan backpack kami melalui scanner. Ada minah
dr Mexico kena tahan sebab ada pisau dlm beg ..jenuh kami jammed menanti kastam n minah tu sort
out their matter.
Lama kami tersadai kat AI, dr jam 1200 jam 1830 baru dapat naik Eurostar. Sampai BRUSSEL MIDI/ZUID
jam 2100. Klau taada masalah sepatutnya kami bertolak jam 1030 tiba Brussels jam 1200.
I was made to understand that ada bombing and landasan keretapi di London terhalang. Tu yang
passenger diarah ke ASHFORD INTERNATIONAL (AI).

Sampai kat Brussel-Zuid (like KL Sentral) dah jam 8mlm..ooppss…tu London time. DiBrussels kena tambah
1 jam. So its 9pm local time. Masuk toilet ..kena E$0.30 (RM1.35)..lesson learn, lain kali ease dlm train.
Dah malam and kami masih belum ada tempat penginapan. Customer Information Counter dah tutup.
Then kami stopped 1 abang in his 40s kata “Youth Hostels” dan dia faham. Masalahnya dia cakap byk
but kami tak faham. Di Belgium bahasa yg digunakan ialah Flemish-speakers, French-speaking and
German-speaker. In the end I bagi buku catitan dan dia tulis nama hostel, metro mana nak ambik,
berhenti dimana..dan…dia bagi 2 bus ticket bernilai E$1.50, each, free. I ada bawa souvenier dr Malaysia..key-chain perak ..so setiap bantuan I terima I bagi key-chain. Abang ni sikit nye epi dpt our
key-chain kami. Hostel yg abang tu recommend was THE CHAP YOUTH HOSTEL dikaw BOTANIQUE. Sampai Botanique it was raining, gelap, berangin and teramat la sejuk. kami bertanya ppl to get to The Chap
bila sampai diberitahu oleh counter gal hostel penuh. But she is very helful. Dia bagi another youth hostel,
that is SLEEP WELL YOUTH HOSTEL, siap dgn peta sekali. Masa keluar dr The Chap kami bertembung
dgn one Japanese gal yg baru nak check-in juga. Bila I kata The Chap dah penuh, dia join kami jalan to the next hostel, SLEEP WELL, Rue-De Danier Road.

Kami check in kat Sleep well. Rate dia E$50 (RM225) untuk 2, it’s a 2 beded room with toilet. Kami
checked in ..rest sekejap and take a stroll dekat Rue-De Danier Road..its like walking dekat Red Light
District lak..byk kedai hiburan yg masih buka. Kami terasa yang ada mamat itam dok ikut kami sbb
3 kali terserempak dgn dia sepanjang perjalan kami ..so we decided to walk to our hotel.
Esok..mula lal ekpedisi kami di Brussels..
terujanyer dgr criter you ni, nora!!!
experience you lebih natural and expensive!'
musim panas??? urgggghhhh....
nora
ko  harus bikin blog la....tulis lengkap2, taruk gambar. bleh jadi reference utk newbies yg teruja nak backpacking (macam aku...hehe). kalau tatau nak bikin blog, tanya aku :bgrin:
Sherrina...Targus adapter tu la yg membolehkan i charge my PDA fon, masak and charge camera.
so far taada problem ttg voltage.
sll nya i masak nasi himpit mkn ngan sambal2/lauk brahim. kat Interlaken (switzerland) hostel dia
membenarkan kita guna dapur dia untuk memasak. Dia charge sf2.00 (RM6.00). But for me..
I guna travelling stove..plug in ..masak nasi impit/soup..free
satu lagi.. I bawa tupperware container yg boleh expand..I dunno whether u have seen it.
Tupperware tu boleh dipenyetkan kan dan diexpand ikut quantity makanan yg kita nak isi.
yg ni pun very helpful..tudung dia buat pinggan dan bekas dia jd mangkuk isi lauk..and space frenly
nora,
tupperware Doremon ke tu? tak pernah tau plak ada tupperware yg bleh buat gitu :bgrin:
