In the olden days, the Chinese immigrant who settled here pronounced the word Mondou as Bandau.

Eventually the name stayed on till in 1975, the Sabah State Government changed the name to Kota Marudu due to geographical and historical reasons.

KOTA BELUD TAMU BESAR

Kota Belud situated 70 km northeast of Kota Kinabalu is about an hour’s drive by car. Known as the “Land of the Cowboys of the East”, it is Sabah’s most scenic and culturally rich district. A melting pot of cultures and customs with a blend of Muslim Bajau community and the many tribes of Kadazandusun and Irranun, Obians as well as Chinese. Kota Belud played a significant role as the cultural hub of northern Borneo for many centuries. The colorful mix of people has contributed to a remarkably rich spectrum of unique culture. Each of the communities has preserved aspects of their traditions, folklore and handicraft that still flourish.

To this day, Kota Belud Tamu (Sunday Market) has continued to maintain its role as a venue for the people and the community to meet and trade.

The best time to view Kota Belud’s striking cultural potpourri is during the grand Tamu Besar. It is Sabah’s biggest open-air market where farmers, fishermen, vendors offer their best produce and wares for sale to the public. The event showcases the unique customs and traditions of the Bajau community. During this auspicious also, all the tribes will come out fully donned in their respective traditional costumes for a day of cultural extravaganza. The Bajaus will stage a grand parade of ponies in resplendent costume dresses and perform a spirited display of their riding skills. Besides the normal buying and selling, other organized activities include a display of farm produce, animals and also the Sarempak/Senisip Pageant.

Visitors will definitely find Kota Belud’s diversity of traditional costume display, dances, music and ceremonies a unique cultural attraction for those who come from other communities or live in the fast lanes of the city.

Cowboys of the East

This is what the Kota Belud Horsemen are popularly known all over the country for their riding skill is legendary, their costumes (and the horses as well) even more. The origin of the horses in Kota Belud is unsure but what is certain is that the Bajau have been breeding and riding them for more than 50 years. The most successful racehorses come from here and no ceremonial parade is complete without the participation of the famous horsemen!

City of Kota Kinabalu - the Gateway to Sabah

The City of Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah. Located on the west coast of “the Land Below the Wind”, under the watchful eye of majestic Mount Kinabalu, and on the fringes of the South China Sea, Kota Kinabalu is the bustling and colourful gateway to Sabah. Here you find the international airport, world class hotels, innumerable restaurants and café shops, shopping malls and business districts. We call our fast developing and modern city with some 350,000 inhabitants simply and affectionately KK!

The state capital has many places of interest. It is a city popular with foreigners and locals alike, and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, adjacent to the city is one of the top tourist destination, perfect for relaxing, snorkelling and a wide variety of watersports. Other places of interest include the Signal Hill Observatory, offering a bird’s view of the city; the Sabah Foundation Building - a unique 30-storey building (it is a circular structure supported by high tensile steel rods, an architectural and engineering marvel, and there are only four such buildings in the world; it is Sabah’s highest tower); the State Mosque, resplendent with its majestic domes and golden motifs is the central place of worship for KK's Muslim population; the new Likas Mosque, the largest in the state; and the Likas Bird Sanctuary.

The State Museum - based on the architecture of Murut and Rungus longhouses has several galleries exhibiting, among others, a cluster of human skulls from Sabah’s headhunting past, totemic figures, old photographs, valuable ancient pottery from all over South East Asia and antique Korans. In the Heritage Village of the museum you find numerous life-size replicas of the traditional houses of the many ethnic entities in Sabah.

The Sutera Harbour Resort, Marina and Golf Club is located at the south end of the city and has become a major landmark. The complex makes Kota Kinabalu an instant resort city: it comprises of two 5-star hotels, an international yacht club and an award winning golf course!

Major shopping malls are located along the main artery of Kota Kinabalu, and you find just about anything from branded goods to local handicraft. Recreational activities in KK include diving, a mere 15 minutes from the city in the crystal clear waters of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park! The ferries to the park leave from KK’s harbour district at the northern end of the City. Click on the links below to find out about more activities and places of interest when you are in Kota Kinabalu!

Pulau Tiga

The Pulau Tiga Resort is a quaint island retreat that offers opportunities to experience nature and at the same time enjoy the serenity of this pristine and unique island off the coast of Borneo. The Pulau Tiga Marine National Park, in which the resort is built, has soared to world fame as 'Survivor Island' because of the popular Million Dollar Prize Money TV series 'Survivor' by the CBS TV network, USA. This is the exact island that the entire first series was filmed! The fact that this island was chosen was due to its untouched natural landscape and marine life.

Located 48 km south of Kota Kinabalu and the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Pulau Tiga Park is reached by driving the 140 km to Kuala Penyu, a small settlement on the tip of the Klias Peninsula. From here it is another 18 km, or about 30 minutes, by boat. Another way of getting there is by chartering a speed boat from Kota Kinabalu and cruise to Pulau Tiga, or fly to Labuan Island and charter a speed boat from Labuan.

Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort – or STAR in short – is the brightest shining star amongst the fine selection of international hotels here in Sabah. The first established 5-star resort hotel in Sabah, STAR has maintained its philosophy of continuously improving excelling standards in Sabah’s growing hospitality industry. With the recent complete renovation of its Tanjung Wing staying at STAR has just become even more inspiring!

Nestled amidst a beautifully landscaped 25-acre park on a peninsula surrounded by the waters of the South China Sea, STAR is only some 15 minutes’ drive from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and 10 minutes’ drive from the capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, your gateway to the rest of ‘the Land Below the Wind’.

The resort’s two wings, the four storey original Tanjung Wing and the new Kinabalu Wing, are centred around a complex of open lobbies and bars, and restaurants offer the choice of in-door dining in refreshingly cooled rooms, or outdoor dining. The lavishly designed rooms – the Tanjung Wing has just undergone major renovations – are spacious and well appointed for both, business and leisure travellers and offer either sweeping views of the South China Sea, or the distant, jungle covered hills of the Crocker Range. The service at STAR is first class par excellence, and so is its gastronomic and leisure offer. Truly Shangri-La! Truly paradise!
