A recent NHK documentary about hallyu star Lee Byung-heon riveted more than 12 million Japanese viewers to their TV sets, recording viewer ratings of 9 percent. Entitled "All About Actor Lee Byung-heon," this special documentary aired Aug. 6 on NHK. The first part of the program was shown from 10:40 PM for 15 minutes, and was followed by the series "All In," starring Lee. The second part, lasting 45 minutes, aired later that night at 11:50 PM.
NHK is considering rerunning the show, as the broadcaster has been flooded with requests for reruns since the show went on the air.
NHK devoted more than four months to producing the program, which describes the actor’s life in an unusual way.

Hanryu star Lee Byung Hun had gone to Brisbane, Australia privately for 2006 calendar photographing.
In order to compliment BH's charm, famous Japanese photographer Nomura Seiichi (野村誠一 ) was invited to do the project. The photographer recently wrote the dairy of his impression regarding LBH in his home page. He praised LBH as a top-quality actor, [b]"an actor among actors". "LBH's intense gaze and warm manner coexist with his sensuality as an actor."[/b]
The matter mentioned was about the goose bumps feeling arose during the photo session. Especially flying together with LBH in the airplane, he was touched by his genial caring for people. Japanese fans were thrilled to see big hallyu stars at the 2005 Hallyu All Star Summit, an unprecedented event that was held at the Super Arena of Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
Prior to the concert, Nikkan Sports wrote that 15 hallyu singers, music groups and actors would gather in one place for a large-scale hallyu event, while Sankei Sports described the event as "grandiose."
The festival, which marked the 40th anniversary of the normalization of Korea-Japan diplomatic ties, drew multitudes of fans, who came to see their favorite hallyu stars all in one place despite heavy rain. It was organized by the Korea Foundation for Asian Culture Exchange and Japan’s Fuji TV, and hosted by Morning Entertainment (CEO Lee Myung-sun).
The first part of the concert, which has just ended successfully, featured four big hallyu actors -- [b]Lee Byung-heon[/b], Jang Dong-keon, Kwon Sang-woo and Kim Seung-woo -- who showed video clips from their TV dramas and movies. Other performers included the singers Rain, Shin Hye-sung, MC the Max, Jang Yun-jung, Tei and the music group Jewelry.
The second part will feature Maya, JK Kim Dong-wook, Cho Eun and the music groups Fire Engine and Chunsangjihee. It will be broadcast live on Fuji TV’s satellite channel Sky Perfect.
Tickets to this event, which drew a total of 24,000 people, were sold out in a single day despite the expensive price of 18,000 yen for S row seats, 15,000 yen for A row seats, and 12,000 yen for B row seats. On Sept. 23, when the big-four stars arrived, Haneda Airport authorities even had to restrict access to the airport for the first time in its 50 year history.

Lee Byung-heon debuts as jewelry designer in Japan[/b][/size][/color]
At a press conference held in Tokyo on Sept. 29, hallyu star Lee Byung-heon announced his plans to debut as a jewelry designer for the Japanese jewelry brand "Samantha Tiara."
The Japanese sports daily Sports Nippon reported on Sept. 30 that Lee--the first male promotion model/designer of the brand--will design necklaces for both men and women featuring a cross and his lucky number "7."

Actors Lee Byung-heon, 35, and Tsumabuki Satoshi, 24, both regarded to be among the most handsome actors in their home countries, will meet at the Pusan International Film Festival, reported the festival's organizers. The two will hold an "open talk" at the Paradise Hotel on Oct. 8 at noon.
Satoshi has a large fan base in Korea. His popularity rose because of his passionate acting in the TV dramas "Lunch no Joou" and "Josee, The Tiger And The Fish," which aired in Korea.
Lee and Satoshi were invited to the festival for their respective movies "A Bittersweet Life" (directed by Kim Ji-un) and "Haru no Yuki" (directed by Yukisada Isao). The festival's organizers have prepared an open-talk event featuring the two actors, who enjoy enormous popularity in their home countries.

Fans of Lee Byung-hun crowded into a small viewing area waiting for the Korean heartthrob during a party Thursday for the Hawaii International Film Festival. Byung-hun Lee is one of the biggest stars in Korea and Japan.
South Korean film and television star Lee Byung-hun is creating a buzz everywhere he goes in Hawaii.
Lee is in the islands to promote his bloody gangster film "A Bittersweet Life," which opens today at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
The 35-year-old actor caused a chaotic scene Thursday night when he made a brief appearance at the film festival's opening night party at a restaurant and was mobbed by more than 100 screaming, picture-snapping, sign-waving fans -- mostly women.

Fans even chased him as he was being taken away in a limousine.
"I was a little afraid someone was going to get trampled," festival spokesman Chris Dacus said.
Lee, star of "Joint Security Area" and "The Poisoning," also has a major following in Japan. Dozens of fans from Japan have traveled to Honolulu in hopes of meeting him, according to festival officials.
Extra security had to be hired for the star when he arrived Wednesday at Honolulu International Airport after his arrival time leaked out on a fan club's Web site. He was greeted by about 75 fans.
"Traditionally, we don't provide security for the celebrities coming into town," Dacus said. "We try to keep them as accessible as possible. But the frenzy toward him, and the crowds that almost trampled each other, requires us to change our normal protocol."

Lee Byung-hun made the contract with Hollywood's biggest agency - 2005/11/13 [/b][/size][/color]
It was confirmed on Nov. 11 that Actor Lee Byung-Hun concluded the exclusive contract with the US biggest agency, Creative Artists Agency : CAA). The Client Information Dept. of CAA said on Nov 11 that Lee is a new client, who will be taken care of by Jenny Rollings.
The phone call with Jenny Rollings has not been conducted, therefore, it is not known yet what the contract contents are and what Lee is going to do with CAA in the future.
This is the first contract with the US agency as the Korean actor. The first Korean player who made a contract with Hollywood was Actress Kim Yoon-jin. She was contracted with William Morris Agency and is now appearing in "Lost."
Manager Rollings in charge Lee watched Lee's movie "A Bittersweet Life" in Cannes Film Festival in May, and she gave him a high praise "James Dean in Asia" who could make a success in Hollywood.
CAA is the biggest management agency in Hollywood in charge of top stars including Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Hugh Grant, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman as well as Director Steven Spielberg and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Samantha Thavasa Christmas Party in Tokyo[/b][/size][/color]
Korean superstar Lee Byung-hun is set to appear alongside Nikki and Paris Hilton, heiresses to the Hilton fortune. Lee will appear as a special guest at a show called the Samantha Thavasa Celebrity Christmas Event, sponsored by the Japanese fashion brand, in the Yokohama Arena on Sunday, where he will be joined by the famous-for-being-famous sisters.
Lee and the Hilton sisters are under contract as designers-cum-promotion models for the brand.
The second part of the event features a performance by K-pop girl band Cheonsangjihee along with Japanese artists. Guests invited to what is billed as a "customer appreciation event" will be chosen by draw among buyers of a Samantha Thavasa necklace designed by Lee.

The selection was based on the online voting for candidates from movies which were shown from 2nd week of November last year till the 2nd week of November this year. After the candidates were short listed Yeongpyeong-sang finally decided the prize winners through the selection conference this year.
The 25th Yeongpyeong-sang prize giving ceremony will be held in the parliament large hall at 6:30PM on the 12th, in cooperation with cultural Tourism Ministry.

In 2006, stars born in the Year of the Dogs are planning to make themselves noteworthy for their achievements.
Stars born in 1982, including Rain, Hyun Bin, Han Ga-in, Kim Min-jeong, Kim A-joong, and Lee Jun-ki will compete with stars born in 1970 like [b][color=#3366FF]Lee Byung-heon[/color][/b], Cha Seung-won, Jeong Jun-ho, Gam Woo-seong, and Kim Hye-soo who wish to solidify their status with their long career and experience.
Other stars born in the Year of the Dog are singer Lee So-eun, table tennis player Ryu Seung-min, baseball player Kim Tae-kyun, and shooter Kang Cho-hyun, who were born in 1982, and comedian Park Myung-soo, comedian Kang Ho-dong, singer Kim Jeong-min, and singer Lee Sang-eun who were born in 1970.
The most promising star this year is Rain (24). Last year, his show "Rainy Day" was a hit in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, propelling him to Asian stardom. As many as one million copies of his album were sold across Asia.

He will play his first leading part in a movie titled "First Love of a Millionaire," which is scheduled to open in theaters in early February. He will play a spoiled, rich high school student in the movie. In the second half of this year, he will appear in an MBC drama.

Actress Han Hye-jin, the heroine of the hit television drama ``Be Strong Geum-soon,'' was one of the biggest breakthrough stars in 2005, which according to the Chinese zodiac was the Year of the Rooster.
Han was born in 1981, also the Year of the Chicken according to the zodiac, which runs on a 12-year cycle. And she certainly made it her year, as her career soared throughout the drama's run and finally peaked at the year-end awards when she walked off with a best actress prize.
And though only a few days into what is the Year of the Dog, several celebrities who were born under the dog sign _ in 1970 and 1982 _ are already showing a strong presence.
The two actors in the title roles of the film ``King and the Clown'' just so happen to share the same canine zodiac sign _ Gam in 1970 and Lee in 1982.
The silver screen version of the play ``Yi,'' which tells the story of Yonsan, a Choson Kingdom king, and his favorite jester Kong-gil, drew in the most audiences New Years weekend closing its first week at 1.1 million movie goers.
Those who were born in the Year of the Dog are said to be loyal but to be hard workers as they known for their perseverance. Which may explain why there are so many celebrities of this sign that are on the top or otherwise slowing starting to be recognized.

His delivery in 2004’s ``Ireland’’ won him the lead role in last year’s most popular drama ``My Lovely Samsoon.’’ Whether his popularity will translate onto the big screen has yet to be seen. But fans don’t have to wait too long as ``The Millionaire’s First Love,’’ which Hyun Bin is in his first title role, hits theaters next month.
[b]Rain (June 25, 1982)[/b]
Last year Rain launched his successful first pan-Asian ``It’s Raining’’ tour. Next month the singer/actor takes his act to New York City to perform a double bill at the Madison Square Garden. Rain, whose fourth album is waiting local release this spring, has also been cast in ``Old Boy,’’ director Park Chan-wook’s next film ``Saibogujiman Kwenchana.’’

Han has taken part in hit dramas like ``All In’’ and ``Jewel in the Palace’’ even if they were minor parts. Last year she landed her first two major roles one in TV drama ``Life Again’’ and movie ``Blue Swallow.’’ She starts off 2006 in the soon-to-premiere drama ``Nukdae’’ opposite Eric, the Shinhwa rapper who currently is one of today’s most sought after actors.

[color=darkorchid][size=5][b]Hallyu stars urge release of S. Korean farmers from Hong Kong jail[/b][/size][/color]
Actors Ahn Sung-ki, Lee Young-ae and [color=Purple][b]Lee Byung-heon[/b][/color] have submitted a petition urging the release of South Korean farmers who will be tried at a Hong Kong court on Jan. 11 for staging violent rallies during the latest WTO ministerial meeting.
The Coalition for Cultural Diversity in Moving Images (CDMI) said Jan. 6 that the three actors handed over their petition to the head of the Korean Struggle Mission, which will later deliver the document to the Hong Kong government and police. The mission, comprising Democratic Labor Party Rep. Kwon Young-kil and Tan Byung-ho, left for Hong Kong Jan. 8.
In the petition, the actors expressed regret over violent clashes that occurred "unintentionally" between protesting farmers and local police when the farmers attempted to convey their anti-globalization messages to the WTO ministerial meeting. The petition also strongly urged the Hong Kong government and police to let the Korean farmers return to their families as soon as possible, citing their desperate struggle for survival.
The petition signed by the three most influential hallyu stars in Hong Kong carries a special meaning. The CDMI said the actors hope that their petition will be of help to the arrested farmers.
Currently, 11 Korean farmers are awaiting a trial in Hong Kong. The content of the petition will be disclosed to the public by the local media.

Actors Ahn Sung-ki and Lee Byung-hun and actress Lee Young-ae have filed a petition urging the swift release of eleven South Korean protesters awaiting trial in Hong Kong.
The Coalition for Cultural Diversity in Moving Images said Friday that the three stars delivered the petition to a delegation opposed to the World Trade Organization that will leave for Hong Kong Sunday.
Led by Democratic Labor Party lawmakers Kwon Young-ghil and Dan Byung-ho, the delegation will file the petition with the Hong Kong government and police.
In the petition, the three actors expressed deep regret over the incident, saying something undesirable happened though the protesters did not want to clash with the Hong Kong government and police.
They also urged a swift release of the protesters in consideration of their suffering in a foreign country.

Popular actors Ahn Sung-ki, Lee Young-ae and [b]Lee Byung-hun[/b] will send a plea to Hong Kong authorities for the release of 11 South Korean farmers, who are accused of staging illegal rallies there on Dec. 17.
The Korean stars, widely popular in East Asia, said in their plea that they felt sorry for the unintentional clash between Hong Kong police and Korean protesters, but asked the court to release the 11 Koreans now in custody. A group of Korean demonstrators went over to Hong Kong to stop WTO ministers’ meetings from reaching a deal on trade liberalization, but during the rally, they collided with the port’s police.
The plea will be delivered to the Hong Kong government and police by a Korean delegation on Jan. 8, prior to a trial for them.

In 2006, Chungmu-ro (Korean Hollywood) will focus its attention on top actors JDG and Lee Byung Hyun. About 15 – 20 movies will be made this coming spring and most of the movie production companies hope to cast JDG and LBH.

But for JDG and LBH, apart from their star power, their acting talents have also been widely recognized. Thus naturally they received many offers from the movie production companies.

Watching [i]A Bittersweet Life[/i] for the first time brings back fond memories of seeing John Woo's [i]The Killer[/i] back in the early 90's. Stylistically they're miles apart, but like that definitive Chow Yun Fat movie Kim Jee-woon's ice cold revenge drama never lets up and has instant classic written all over it.
Lee Byung-hun plays Kim Sun-woo, an enforcer for local criminal bigshot Kang. By the time we meet him he's already climbed to a notable position of trust and despite the squabblings of those below him his well ordered life seems untouchable. The future looks bright. On the rare occasion he has to dip down to the underclass he dispenses punishment in such a matter of fact way that you can't imagine anyone getting the better of him. He's set up for a hell of a fall.
That tumble comes of course in the form of a woman - Kang's mistress no less who is left under his supervision. Kim warms to the girl, a cellist, and in the few days they spend together everything goes smoothly despite her insistence that she doesn't need a minder. Things go to hell when Kim discovers her infidelity and subsequently breaks his own rules and Kang's wishes in the way that he deals with his discovery. The mobster returns and before Kim knows what is happening he finds himself on the wrong side of the people who have just been dreaming of him making such a slip. Torture and revenge follow as both employer and employee attempt to find the solution to unanswerable questions. Just exactly why all this unfolds in the way that it does is the central theme.
[b]Gunfights, fisticuffs, Russian gunrunners and a memorable standoff in an ice rink follow, before the inevitable action fest finale that actually has much more in common with Sam Peckinpah than anything to come out of Korea in recent years. There's no point in the Americans even trying to remake this one unless they can revive Steve McQueen first.[/b]
[i]A Bittersweet Life[/i] is generating comparisons to Park Chan-wook's 'vengeance' trilogy ([i]Lady Vengeance[/i] is released next month) and while this is understandable Kim Jee-woon seems to be aiming for something very different. There's no quirky plotting here and smiles are thin lipped throughout. [i]Old Boy[/i] in comparison is a riot, a tricked out BMX to this cold chrome racer and yet both share intensely memorable leads whose quests for truth have the ring of Greek tragedy about them. This is heroic bloodshed as it used to be done and you'd be crazy not to give it a go.
